(5th January 2015)
I write to thank you for your hard work over the past year in the setting of some considerable changes. Since November last year, Ward 34 has successfully relocated to Ward 37 (and conveniently collocated next to Ward 38), the Diabetes Out-Patient Clinics have consolidated from 3 locations at LRI and LGH to the new Diabetes Out-Patient Centre at LGH, and most recently the Endocrine Programmed Investigation Unit has been created out of the old Foot Clinic on the LRI Victoria Corridor.
Inevitably there have been some challenges along the way, but thank you for your forbearance and adaptability, and we can now deliver high quality Diabetes and Endocrine Services in either new or renovated facilities. The specialist Diabetes Service is getting national recognition for the Super 7 model, which we have taken forward, in spite of the Diabetes Transformation Report not being fully funded by commissioners, while there are an increasing number of highly specialist Endocrine Clinics.
Both Wards 37 and 38 have performed highly in the context of increasing demand. Through the Autumn, there were 11% more admissions, but there has been a similar increase in the number of patients being discharged, reflecting overall improved performance. Indeed Ward 37 was recognised as an ‘exemplar ward’ by ECIST.
Thus there have been many successes, and every Team member has made an important contribution, for which both myself and more importantly our patients are incredibly grateful. I wish you a Merry Christmas, and both a Happy and Prosperous New Year…
With very best wishes,
Ian Lawrence - Diabetes Consultant - Head of Service
