The Children’s Diabetes Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) is a multi-professional group serving the population of Leicester and Leicestershire and Rutland. The service supports children and young adults from birth 0-19 year olds across the region. This service is delivered under the support of the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

The Children’s service currently offers outpatient clinics at Leicester Royal Infirmary and peripheral clinics in Melton Mowbray, Market Harborough, Coalville and Loughborough. Inpatient facilities are provided for young people under 16 at the Children’s Hospital within Leicester Royal Infirmary and there are inpatient facilities for young people over 16 within the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Our Aims:  Children’s Diabetes Multidiciplinary Team


To ensure a co-ordinated approach to diagnosis, treatment and management of care for all children and young people with Diabetes. The MDT is committed to achieving the highest standard of care and patient outcomes through:


  1. A consistent approach in the management and self care of diabetes. To be available for the children, their parents and other professionals for provision of advice, education and support
  2. Incorporate new research and best practice into the care of children, young people and their carers
  3. Provide comprehensive information to children, young people, carers and their relatives. To promote independence in self-management for young people with diabetes and their families
  4. Involve children, young people and their families in assessment and redesigning of the service. To provide individual care for each child and family
  5. Follow National and Children Young People’s Diabetes Network guidelines adherence with the diabetes tarrif and submission to the National Paediatric Diabetes Audit
  6. The collection of high quality data
  7. The analysis of such data in audit cycles and submission to the paediatric National Diabetes Audit
  8. The involvement in local, national and international research studies
