Studies have shown blood glucose control to reduce the occurrence of major complications in patients with diabetes. To enable people with diabetes to maintain tight glycaemic control, self-monitoring is recommended for some people with diabetes and can therefore be an integral part of diabetes management.
Recently there has been a surge in the number of new monitors and therefore there are many more blood glucose monitoring strips available on the UK market. The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) Standard 15197 for blood glucose monitoring strips is also undergoing revision and tighter accuracy requirements are expected. The Leicestershire and Rutland preferred list of blood glucose testing strips has been reviewed and this was seen as an opportunity to reassess the choices based on the new proposed ISO standard and availability of newer and more cost-effective test strips.
An extensive evaluation into blood glucose testing strips has taken place. The review included patient feedback and preference, healthcare professional feedback and assessment against locally agreed quality standards. The Leicestershire Medicines Strategy Group has approved a preferred list of testing strips for prescription on the NHS in the Leicestershire and Rutland area, see link below.
