Screening for glucose intolerance and development of a lifestyle education programme for prevention of type-2 diabetes in a population with learning disabilities

Getting Creative - Competition winners

Adults with learning disabilities who attend day opportunity centres in Leicester and Leicestershire were asked to take part in a poster competition. They were asked to include ideas and pictures about health checks, healthy foods and exercise. We are using the artwork to help tell people about what we are doing. Some of the posters have been used on flyers and banners to help promote the study.

Below are the 4 posters that were chosen as the winners and the participants were given a prize voucher.

What is the Study About ?

People with learning disabilities have more health problems than the general population and are less likely to access help. Additionally, due to a combination of lifestyle factors (e.g. poor diet, lack of physical activity), associated medical problems, and certain types of prescribed medication, people with learning disabilities may be at increased risk of developing type-2 diabetes.

Aims and Objectives

The University of Leicester, in conjunction with Leicestershire Partnership Trust, is currently conducting the STOP Diabetes study. The aim of the STOP Diabetes study is to screen people with learning disabilities for diabetes and impaired glucose regulation. We also want to develop an appropriate lifestyle education programme for people with learning disabilities and/or their carer’s, to help prevent diabetes in the future.

We are hoping to involve all general practices in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. Practices will be asked to send an initial letter of invitation to people on their practice learning disability register.

How we will screen
