Referral To The UHL Diabetes Specialist Dietitans

The Diabetes Specialist Dietitians are an integral member of the multi-disciplinary team. The UHL diabetes dietetic team is based at both the Leicester General Hospital and Leicester Royal Infirmary. The dietitians jointly work with Diabetes Specialist Nurses and Consultants in diabetes specialist out-patient clinics.

They are also involved with several patient education programmes for people with diabetes such as DAFNE (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating) and DESMOND (Diabetes Education for Self-management Ongoing and Newly Diagnosed), foundation groups and Insulin management groups


Who should be referred to the Diabetes Specialist Dietitian Service?


  • Newly diagnosed with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes

  • Type 1 and 2 Diabetes with poor glycaemic control (HbA1c above target)

  • A low Body Mass Index - less than 19

  • Nutritionally at risk

  • poor wound healing

  • A Body Mass Index >25 - overweight

  • Obese

  • Very obese

  • Raised lipid levels - cholesterol and/or triglycerides

  • Pre-pregnancy, gestational diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance test in pregnancy, breast feeding with diabetes

  • Change of treatment

  • Diet to diet and tablets

  • Diet and tablets to diet and insulin

  • Experiencing frequent hypos

  • Renal Impairment/failure - creatinine>200mmol/l  urea>30mmol/l


2. Over restrictive eating patterns 

  • Erratic eating pattern eg. Shift worker
  • Vegans for Vitamin D and Calcium intake assessment
  • Post menopausal women for calcium assessment


3. Screening for suspected eating disorder

  • Bulimia
  • Anorexia
  • Compulsive eating

4. other

  • Not seen a dietitian within 5 years
  • To improve self management
  • On another therapeutic diet eg Coeliac diet, milk intolerance
