Diabetes Services

Leicestershire Nutrition and Dietetics Service (LNDS)

LNDS Provides a service across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
 The community dietetic service is part of Leicestershire Partnership Trust. The main office for primary care dietetics is at Warren Park Way in Enderby, but the dietitians work with their local communities and have bases across the city and county.


The service includes:

  • Patient clinics
  • Domiciliary visits
  • Community hospital work
  • Training and education
  • Patient group education
  • Advice and resources
  • Access to specialist services

The Primary Care Dietitians can receive referrals from the Community Diabetes Specialist Team and other healthcare professionals

Primary Care Dietetic Clinics

Over 40 clinics are held a month in various locations across the city and county. The service offers patients choice about where they would like to see a dietitian by arranging appointments through the central booking office at Enderby.  Community Dietitians also support specialist diabetes clinics in:

  • Melton Mowbray
  • Market Harborough
  • Hinckley
  • Loughborough
  • Coalville


Housebound Patients

Telephone consultations are offered to patients unable to attend an outpatient clinic and if need be a home visit can be arranged. This will usually be at the request of the referring agent and in line with the referral criteria.

Referral Procedure And Criteria

Referrals can be made using the LNDS referral form  available on the healthcare professionals section of the LNDS website) and faxed or sent to the central booking office at Enderby (see address below).

Referral criteria for the service are available on the LNDS website, this includes patients who are: 

  • Newly diagnosed with diabetes
  • Have impaired glucose tolerance / pre-diabetes / high risk of developing diabetes
  • Have diabetes with co-existing hyperlipidaemia/obesity / undernutrition
  • Uncontrolled diabetes requiring review      


Community Hospitals

The community dietetic service also provides a service to all of the community hospitals across the county, Clarendon and Beechwood wards at the Evington Centre, and to the mental health wards

Training And Education

Nutrition training is offered to healthcare professionals on essential nutrition (nutrition advice for general health), weight management, diabetes, coronary heart disease, and South Asian nutritional issues. See our website for the latest information on training

Patient Groups

The community dietetic service offer a range of group weight management sessions across the city and county for those who have a BMI >28 with co-morbidities or >30 without.
Referral is by the usual route as well as self-referral. 

Advice And Resources

LNDS produce a number of leaflets and patient information on all nutrition and dietetic issues. These can be accessed by the website and health care staff can access more detailed info through the intranet on the same website.

Access To Specialist Services

The following specialist services are also provided by the community dietetic service:

  • Home Enteral Nutrition Service
  • Service for people with HIV/AIDS
  • Community Children’s Service

Other specialist services are provided when a patient has been referred to Directorates within the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and Leicestershire Partnership Trust.
