The Diabetes Specialist Midwives

The Diabetes Specialist Midwives provide support and advise on both diabetes control and midwifery care throughout pregnancy and postnatal period at the University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL). 

They facilitate specialist antenatal clinics at both sites, provide support and advice for both women and healthcare professionals on diabetes management in labour and arrange postnatal follow-up care.

They work closely with the diabetes specialist nurses and consultants specialising in antenatal care.

Who can be referred?


  • Women who have either type 1 or type 2 diabetes prior to their pregnancy


  • Women who develop Gestational Diabetes ie Glucose Tolerance test (GTT) in pregnancy fasting value of more than 5.5 mmol/l and/or a 2 hour value of 7.8 mmol/l or more


  • In addition they regularly provide educational support for healthcare professionals and students and have involvement in audit and research projects.
