Diabetes Services

The Childrens's Diabetes Team

The Children’s Diabetes Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) is a multi-professional group serving the population of Leicestershire City, Countycity, Leicestershire County and Rutland CountyRutland County and the surrounding areas. The service supports 0-19 year olds within a population base of around 1.5 million people across the region. This service is delivered under the auspices of the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

The team consists of 3 Consultant Paediatricians; 2 as Specialist Endocrinologists and Diabetologists and 1 as a Specialist Interest in Diabetes . There are 5 Paediatric Diabetes Nurse Specialists (PDSNs)  There are 2 Paediatric Dietitians with a special interest in diabetes.

There is a Consultant’s secretarial pool that provides administrative support for the team. There are also 7 Adult Diabetologists, 2 teams of Adult DSN and Adult DSN’s within the community. The Children’s service currently offers outpatient clinics at Leicester Royal Infirmary and peripheral clinics in Melton Mowbray, Market Harborough, Coalville and Loughborough. Inpatient facilities are provided for young people under 16 at the Children’s Hospital within Leicester Royal Infirmary and there are inpatient facilities for young people over 16 within the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

The aims of the Children’s Diabetes Team are:

The aim of the MDT is to help ensure a co-ordinated approach to diagnosis, treatment and management of care for all children and young people with Diabetes. The MDT is committed to achieving the highest standard of care and patient outcomes through:

  1. A consistent approach in the management and self care of diabetes. To be available for the children, their parents and other professionals for provision of advice, education and support.
  2. Incorporating new research and best practice into the care of children, young people and their carers.
  3. Providing comprehensive information to children, young people, carers and their relatives.To promote independence in self-management for young people with diabetes and their families.
  4. Involving children, young people and their families in assessment and redesigning of the service. To provide individual care for each child and family.
  5. Following National and Children Young People’s Diabetes Network guidelines
  6. The collection of high quality data.
  7. The analysis of such data in audit cycles and submission to the paediatric national diabetes audit .
  8. The involvement in local, national and international research studies.


Paediatric Clinics

Most children at diagnosis are referred to Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI) - Admissions Unit for assessment and to initiate their individual “Care Package”.

  • Regular Reviews are then arranged for each child/young person in an out-patient (clinic) venue. 
  • Most children/young adults require 2-3 monthly appointments. These can be made at the most convenient clinic for the child and his/her family.

Most of the Childrens' Team are also member of and engage proactively in voluntary Diabetes support groups across Leicestershire- Leicestershire Parents Group of Diabetes UK.
