Please write your picture caption here Our Multidisciplinary Diabetes team Is probably the largest In England. The Diabetes Team consists of Consultant Physicians, Nurse Consultants, Matron, Diabetes Specialist Nurses (DSN), Specialist Registrars, Dietitians, Pharmacist, Foot Specialists, Diabetes Educators, Endocrinologists, Researchers, Administrators, Clinic Coordinators, Medical Secretaries and Clerical Supporters all headed by the Service Manager. 

What we do

Our Multidisciplinary Team works across all three hospital sites, Leicester Royal, Leicester General the Glenfield hospital and in the community. The overall responsibility for the department lies with the Head of Service and Service Manager. 

The Diabetes Team provide:

Acute inpatient care

  • A comprehensive service is offered to patients in our dedicated diabetic clinics including retinopathy screening

  • Outpatient service to include a dedicated diabetic foot clinic, adolescent clinic, young adults and children’s clinics, pump therapy clinics, ante-natal diabetes & endocrinology clinics

  • Close links with specialist clinics such as childrens, maternity and kidney services

  • Diabetes education groups, insulin initiation groups, individual nurse led clinics, diabetes dietitians, specialist diabetes education programmes, DESMOND, DAFNE


  • Endocrinology services




We the Diabetes team within the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust offer a wide range of specialist diabetes care and services across the three  hospitals sites giving support to the multidisciplinary team and within the community. 

  • Routine diabetes clinics these are by appointment only.
  • Specialist Clinics with other disciplines. 
  • Community based diabetes clinics

Outpatient and Community Care

We also run community based clinics and support Primary Care in the management of people with diabetes. Our Diabetes Specialist Nurses (DSN’s)  run the Integrated Diabetes Care Service ICDS.

Diabetes Education for patients and carers within UHL 

The Diabetes Specialist Nursing (DSN) provides a wide range of services to patients including: 

  • Diabetes Management Advise including living with diabetes 
  • Diabetes Education Groups
  • Group Insulin Initiation
  • Insulin Pump Therapy
  • Individual nurse led clinics 
  • Inpatient Care 
  • Paediatric Specialist advice for teenagers
  • Antenatal advise for pregnancy and gestational Diabetes
  • Specilaist Foot Care
  • Specialist Eye Care 
  • Combined Renal Clinics

  • Retinal Screening

Diabetes Education Programmes for Patients

  • DAFNE course (Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating) The UHL Diabetes Team centrally provide the 5-day education programme for people with Type 1 Diabetes. The programme is delivered by the Diabetes Specialist Nurses and Diabetes Dietitians. It is evidence based and has demonstrated improved levels of diabetes control in patients who have attended.   • DESMOND Education - Diabetes Education for Newly Diagnosed and Ongoing Award winning DESMOND For those newly diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes – education is led by specifically trained healthcare professionals & Nurses.

Many of our consultants and diabetes team run, chair or speak at local Diabetes Uk voluntary groups

For Healthcare Professionals

  • Leicestershire Diabetes Guidelines The Leicestershire Guidelines have been developed in line with national guidelines and recommendations. These guidelines aim to advice on best practice and contain extensive information, including referral pathways to the Secondary Care Team. 


Healthcare Professional Training and Development

The Diabetes Team is committed to provide updates and training and development courses in diabetes for health care colleagues. 

Additionally the team provide a variety of training opportunities and conferences including one day programmes, Diabetes Updates

The team also offer the new MSc Diabetes in collaboration with the University of Leicester.

EDEN - Effective diabete education now, a taught programme for practices across Leicester.


Diabetes Research - The Leicester Diabetes Centre 

The diabetes team also has established an excellent research centre at the LGH and undertakes clinical research in all areas of diabetes led by Professor Melanie Davies and Professor Kamlesh Khunti and host South East Midlands Diabetes Research Network, the University of Leicester metbolic medicines Research, the Bimedical Research Centre and more.

Leicester is the origin for the DESMOND National Programme with the National Director Marian Carey and her team.


Leicester also hosts the South East Midlands Diabetes Research Network (SEM DRN) headed by Prof. Melanie Davies, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust is Lead NHS Organisation working in collaboration with the University of Leicester as part of the National Institute of health research  - CLAHRC
