DESMOND is a leading diabetes education programme for people with Type 2 diabetes, developed here is Leicester by the Diabetes Research team. Meet DESMOND.
There are several versions of the programme currently available:
DESMOND Foundation - for those with established diabetes
DESMOND BM - separate programme for both newly diagnosed and established diabetes for the South Asian community, which can be delivered in the main South Asian Languages.
A Safer Ramadan - for those wishing to fast safely in the month of Ramadan
How will I benefit?
You will get up to date information about your diabetes to help you make informed choices on your care and treatment. Have the opportunity to discuss and explore factors relating to diabetes, such as food choices, activities and medication. Meet and talk to others in the same situation.
If you are newly diagnosed or have had diabetes for a long time, and are interested in Desmond Education speak to your health care professional about getting onto a local course.
There is a booking system for DESMOND in your area, your doctor or nurse will explain this, your details will be given to the Local Desmond Education Coordinator who will then contact you with dates, details and directions for the venue where the course is being held.
After that you simply turn up and take part!
There are no fees or charges for you to take part in the Desmond education programme.
"The great comfort I found in the DESMOND sessions is that they were really about us, the people with diabetes. It wasn't six hours of 'you must do this or that'.
We talked the disease; its causes; its implications; and more importantly, how we could adapt our diet and lifestyle to reduce the dangers caused by diabetes.
I think that there is a common misconception out there that Type 2 diabetes is nothing to worry about. I know I was one. I soon understand that Type 2 is as serious as insulin dependant Type 1 and while alarmed at that realisation, I was grateful for the knowledge."
